The U.S. Mint may produce the most coins in the world, but they aren’t winning any prizes for innovative coin design. A prestigious panel of coin experts recently announced ten categories for the Coin of the Year Awards and all of them were produced by foreign mints.
It has to be pretty embarrassing when the U.S. Mint is outclassed by mints in countries that no one has every heard of. How about the National Bank of Kyrgyz Republic which won the award for the most historically significant coin?
Even the tiny Bank of Latvia managed to come up with a unique rectangular coin design that was voted the “Most Artistic Coin.”
Pictures of the other magnificent coins selected as the world’s ten best can be viewed here.
